Beginners Guide To Refilling Inkjet Cartridges

In today’s environmentally conscious world, many inkjet owners choose to refill their printer ink cartriges. Refilling inkjet cartridges not only cuts down on waste but also can be very cost effective over purchasing a new piece of plastic to hold your ink. However, if you look at your inkjet cartridge as being just a piece of plastic, it’s time you took a second look.

Along with the container that holds the ink, most printer ink cartriges also include circuitry that reads the printer information and tells the jets when to squirt the ink onto your media. Although circuitry is generally quite durable, it isn’t everlasting and refilling worn out inkjet cartridges with fresh ink cleans out any savings you made on bulk ink or an inkjet refill kit. Cautious estimates are that an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) cartridge should last for three to five refills. Although there are claims at some Internet sites that cartridges can be filled up to fourteen times, any refill after the fifth one is a “guesstimate” at best!

Flushing your printer ink cartriges ensures that all traces of old ink and dried ink particles are removed from the cartridge and minimizes the risk of clogs that can ruin your print job and damage your inkjet cartridges print heads as well. Many inkjet suppliers offer cartridge cleaning kits. However, there is a “catch”. If you regularly refill your own cartridges to save money, the additional purchase of a cleaning kit substantially cuts into refill kit savings.

Another consideration in refilling your own printer ink cartridges is the mess. Most truthful sites encourage you to keep a roll of paper towels handy when filling inkjet cartridges. Aside from leaving ink on your hands, you also need to be sure to wipe all traces of ink from the exterior of your printer ink cartriges before refitting them into your printer.

Finally, although you save on the initial expense when you buy bulk ink or refill kits for printer ink cartriges, how much is your time worth? Even if you have an office assistant or another employee refill your inkjet cartridges, you need to ask how much their time is worth to you, since after all, you’re probably paying them by the hour!

You can still help the environment by purchasing remanufactured printer ink cartriges. Remanufactured inkjet cartridges are flushed, inspected and refilled. Reputable companies refill inkjet cartridges adhering to the highest ISO 9001 standards; so, what you get when you purchase a remanufactured cartridge is equal to brand new compatible inkjet cartridges but usually for less expense.

Hewlett Packard, Epson, and Lexmark all have programs that are free to customers who wish to recycle OEM printer ink cartriges. In addition, many independent programs recycle inkjet cartridges and donate the proceeds to charity.

While inkjet cartridge refill kits and bulk printer ink are one option to save on cartridge expense, the environmentally conscious Inkjet Printer owner has several other options available for recycling printer ink cartriges.
